We've all heard the debate: equal pay for equal play. But there is another growing debate in tennis, only this time the focus is solely on the men's game.

At the core of the debate: Is there a benefit to keeping the best-of-five set format at Grand Slam tournaments? Should it be changed to best-of-three?

The impact of such a change would be significant, specifically for the fan experience, TV schedules and match length, as well as the potential for a reduction in injuries.

This debate comes at a pivotal time in tennis, when the grind of five-hour slugfests is testing the physical limits of players more than ever. Talent and finesse sometimes take a back seat to pure athleticism.

John McEnroe, winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles, wants to see a format change but nothing drastic. 'I would come up with a system that is somewhere in the middle, because best-of-three could be a little bit unfair for the top guys,' he told USA TODAY Sports.

Certainly the wear and tear of playing best-of-five set matches over a period of two weeks can take its toll. Few players are more keenly aware of this than Rafael Nadal. He missed Wimbledon in 2009 as a result of tendinitis in his knees, and more recently he missed the 2012 Olympics, 2012 U.S. Open and 2013 Australian Open.

Jim Courier, a four-time Grand Slam singles champion and Davis Cup captain who has played his fair share of five-set matches, questions the correlation between injuries and the five-set format.

'If one is to suggest that best-of-five sets causes more injuries than best-of-three sets, there should be data used to prove that point, and there is much to consider if one takes the route of trying to prove that thesis,' Courier says.

McEnroe agrees that the injury connection isn't so clear.

'If it's strictly about an injury, whether or not it causes more injuries, I think that, in my opinion, hasn't been determined. Because you're certainly free to play less and less events around the majors, and no one says you have to play 22 tournaments or play X amount of exhibitions or play the week before,' McEnroe said. 'To me, that's less of an issue than the sheer excitement and interest of the game, where, oftentimes, late in a match, especially when it goes past the distance in the fifth, it seems like both players are very fatigued and usually it boils down to who blinks or who makes a couple of double faults easier.'

Of course, not all players are created equal, and one player with a chronic injury doesn't make a statistic. But when it's Nadal who is absent from competition, or any player in the Big Four, the ripple effect can be damaging.

Keeping with tradition

There certainly are compelling arguments in favor of preserving the best-of-five format.

First, there is history. Would we have witnessed the epic 2008 Wimbledon final between Nadal and Federer with a best-of-three format? Not likely. Would Courier have beaten Andre Agassi in the 1991 French Open final (the score was 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4)? Courier most likely would have adjusted his game to account for a smaller margin of error, but who knows?

Second, there is competition.

ESPN analyst and former ATP Tour player Darren Cahill says when it comes to Grand Slam tournaments, 'The better players normally win over the course of best-of-five sets. It makes it a more physical encounter, which means the off-court training is more important on a year-round basis. That is probably why we're seeing more players playing better tennis when they're 27 to 32, because they've got that groundwork of five to 10 years of off-court training.'

Tradition, too, plays a role. Wimbledon whites, anyone? Tennis isn't so rigid that it has a billygoat-like aversion to change. But there are examples. In 2007, the ATP eliminated the best-of-five set finals in non-Grand Slam tournaments. A significant change, which has reduced playing time, and likely the risk of injury.

ESPN's Brad Gilbert and Cahill are self-proclaimed traditionalists who are not in favor of changing the best-of-five format to best-of-three but are willing to examine both sides of the debate.

The problem, according to Gilbert, is more than just an issue with tradition.

'Some people think five-hour matches are too long,' he said. 'But that's what makes them different from all other tournaments. Playing best-of-five. I would hate to see that go away, even though it might be better for TV.'

Gilbert did point out a possible solution.

'Maybe if a match gets past 12-all in the fifth, then you play a tiebreaker,' he said. 'I don't want to see a 20-18 fifth set where guys are dropping, so I would like to see a limit on a fifth set. So if it's 12-all, then we play a tiebreaker.'

Gilbert says the only concession he would ever make is to do no-add scoring: 'You could make a best-of-five set match a lot shorter. You wouldn't have a 15-minute game.'

Incremental steps

McEnroe also is in favor of possibly shortening a fifth set.

'Maybe best-of-seven, or something shorter, because I think that people's attention spans in general are a lot shorter than they used to be,' he said.

McEnroe definitely favors having tiebreakers in the fifth set of all majors.

'That would give players light at the end of the tunnel, and after four-plus hours, that's more than enough time,' he said.

Currently, tiebreaks are not used in the fifth set in singles in the Australian Open, French Open or Wimbledon. Only the U.S. Open uses a tiebreak in the deciding set.

'We wouldn't even be having this discussion if it wasn't for the Olympics last year,' says Cahill, who suggests the Games are a good testing ground for the best-of-three format. 'The positives outweigh the negatives for the Olympics, because it felt like there were more crucial matches from the very first game.

'It gave more of a dramatic feel to every single match. I felt like from a mental perspective, they had to be on their game from the very first game. It's like when (Fernando) Verdasco had a two-set lead on (Andy) Murray (at Wimbledon), and Murray reeled him in in five sets. At the Olympics, you couldn't afford to take a holiday for two or three games mentally and let someone skip away with a quick lead, because with a best-of-three sets, the match is done.'

Another argument in favor of best-of-three is the window for television.

Stick

'More money is being pumped into TV rights these days,' Cahill says. 'The U.S. Open TV rights were just renegotiated. Having a window where you think a match could be completed in a more normal time frame is pretty attractive for TV.'

Martina Navratilova, an 18-time Grand Slam tournament singles champion, has been a vocal advocate for change to a best-of-three set format for the men.

In a recent interview for Laureus.com, Navratilova expressed her concerns about the current Grand Slam format.

'We've had issues with injuries over the years, both on the men's and women's tour,' she said. 'This year in particular came to light more so when the top guys are hurt. Roger Federer is like the ironman, but Nadal has had issues. He was out for about eight months. Andy Murray missed the French Open with a bad back; Novak Djokovic had issues with his ankle. It's really become so taxing. I believe because of that, one day we will have two-out-of-three in the Grand Slams.'

Navratilova also feels pointed to the more physical, harder brand of tennis.

'No. 1, we're playing hard surfaces most of the year, they put more hours in, everybody hits the ball harder and they have to run harder. It all just takes its toll on the body,' she said.

Over the course of Nadal's career, he has reached a fifth set 21 times, with a win-loss record of 16-5. Federer's record: 22-17.

While McEnroe doesn't want to see a change in the number of sets, he said, 'I would prefer to see matches finish where there was possibly still something left in the tank and that conceivably someone could bounce back and be able to play as well in the next match, if you needed to play in another match.'

Debates are one thing, but actual clamoring for change is another.

Courier offers a set of criteria in which change to a best-of-three set format should be considered:

Current players decide the game has become too physical for best-of-five sets and demand change.

Tennis fans around the world who are tired of best-of-five and begin voting with their eyeballs and wallets by losing interest in the majors. 'One must remember that America is not the only tennis consumer, and tennis is much more popular outside of the U.S. in most of the big-market nations,' he said.

TV executives start offering lower rights fees for a tournament with the best-of-five format while making a separate, greater offer for a best-of-three format. 'At the moment it is not clear that there is much to gain business-wise from a best-of-three format for the men as TV rights continue to climb for the Grand Slam events,' Courier said. 'If that was no longer the case, then the players and tournaments would have a business decision to make.'

Without question, a Grand Slam tournament represents the ultimate test for players. The argument over which format is best might never be won, but this much is certain: There is plenty of room for debate.
