Xenonauts Alien Leader 7,9/10 9662 votes

Alien Base Purpose. A functional Alien Base provides two benefits to the Aliens. It constantly lowers the regions financial contributions to the Xenonauts project, if left operational it would eventually force the region to abandon the project.

I've been rocking ironman veteran and the invasion just always gets out of hand for me so quickly. I had total air superiority for 2 months and then the landingships started to appear, signaling the next difficulty increase. So I start to lose air control and bam, andron terror mission. I am still on lasers and jackal combat amour; and right there to greet me at the front ramp is a big blue andron that eats 3 electroshock grenades and a rocket before sniping two dudes dead. My team finally finished the fucker off but in the meantime every andron on the map has been closing in and they can't even get out of the chopper without being instantly killed.

So with my A team in shambles the aliens then proceed to go set up some bases I can't even think about trying to clear anytime soonI am thinking it's probably better to just let a terror mission slip through earlier rather than when the aliens become so strong you can't avoid it anymore.I think the best/worst terror missions are the air ones. They're easy.provided they're within range of your air bases.

I had one in my last game that was out of range of everything but my Foxtrots and was nothing but small, dodgy ships. Having such a binary potential to gently caress you over is rather annoying.Jul 2, 2014 07:37.AdbotADBOT LOVES YOU. I'd like to know that too. It kind of sucks that Xenonauts punishes player for air superiority as you have to play really badly to get base assaults, terror missions and even alien bases. Would be nice to get other kind of missions than crash sites every now and then.I am not really sure that skipping those missions is 'punishing' the player though. I could see how you if you could manage to both keep air superiority and your tech up at the same time it could be boring though, but in that case you should probably just move to the next game difficulty. In my eyes not having to do them is a reward; they are typically very lethal and expensive to complete.

Maybe I am just bad but if I am even slightly behind in tech those missions always come down to the wire and end with scores of veteran soldiers dead. Since I am always on a shoestring budget it's usually hard to recover from a base or terror mission gone sour.Jul 2, 2014 08:24.Fewd Mar 22, 2007#vmp #opsec #kolmiloikka #happoo. I'm playing on veteran and currently on March or April 1980, that's almost a year into the game and I've seen 0 base assaults, 0 alien bases and now a grand total of 1 terror site. That's basically 3 mission types of 4 missing and while I'm awed by the developers confidence in the entertainment value of their crash site missions, this sucks for variety. It might help if the UFOs did what they came to do instead of taking two day sightseeing wankfests before actually proceeding to activate their specific missions.

Hopefully I get an alien base soon so I can build that base upgrade that tells me what an UFOs purpose is and I can let the ones cockblocking content roam freely. Also you're right about moving on to insane difficulty. But I'd very much like to finish this game first, and I can't since the things required by the plot aren't spawning.Fewd fucked around with this message at 08:45 on Jul 2, 2014Jul 2, 2014 08:41.Alkydere Jun 7, 2010Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.Is the issue that you're shooting down Landers too quickly/aggressively? Landers are supposedly the UFO that sets up bases.Of course in all the games that I've had get to that point, all they've given me is Andron base after Andron base, and you can't capture Andron commanders for the next story mission interrogation.Jul 2, 2014 08:47.The Lone Badger Sep 24, 2007.

Bring a tank. Androns might laugh at small arms, but a mounted plasma cannon will vaporise them just like anything else. In groups if they stand too close together.Oh yeah, do this. One of the first things I always research is the Hunter car. Having Hunter with a laser canon takes a good chunk of the sting out of early Andron fights.Jul 2, 2014 09:28.Friction Aug 15, 2001The new more aggressive alien behaviour inside UFOs in 1.07 is both welcome and terrifying change at the same time. Door blocking strats end up in grenade rain. Also, a Sebillian leader charged my ambush group and ate full burst of scatter laser at point blank range.

So much for that capture attemptJul 2, 2014 09:31.wolfman101 Feb 8, 2004PCXL FanboySo, they removed quicksaveI am actually pretty mad about this. You can't just enforce your vision of how people will save your games on them. I know you can manually save, but that poo poo takes forever. If I want autosaves every turn, then allow me to have autosaves every turn.Well, on the bright side, this will be very simple to patch back in.Jul 2, 2014 14:32.PotatoManJack Nov 9, 2009Finally got around to picking this up a couple of days ago, and it really does bring back the feel of X-Com. I'm really enjoying the tactical missions so far.Definitely the air combat simulator is a bit nebulous, and I've basically resorted to auto-resolve most of the time. Also, you've gotta love Rookies' ability to miss a full clip from an assault rifle at 10 ft.Jul 3, 2014 00:18.Diogines Dec 22, 2007. Five questions:1. What is the ideal base placement? 1 in north Ffrica/the middle east, 1 in eastern Russia, one in southeast Asia, 1 in central America?2. Do you build 2 bases in the first month and in the third, or do you drop 3 in the first month?3. Since the UFO is always in a corner of the map, it is my observation that the way to minimize casualties is to hug the corner of the map, covering every corner and thus minimizing my exposure to random enemies popping out on me, then taking the UFO and waiting five turns.

The benefit from saving native forces does not seem to be even remotely worth the risk to your soldiers dying. Am I underestimating the harm from4. Does doing downed UFO missions improve relations with a region, or only downing UFOs?5. Is there a 'economic information' tab to see my income/expenses summarized in some manner, beyond the base screen or mousing over a region?Diogines fucked around with this message at 01:24 on Jul 3, 2014Jul 3, 2014 01:16.dyzzy Dec 22, 2009. ArghI like Cuba, Egypt, and the Phillipines. I don't think 4 are necessary. And I think 2 in the first month are good, maybe have the second one building near the end of the month.

If you spread the money to thin you can't defend the airspace you occupy. On missions I generally do what you described, keeping my forces in two squads. Depends on the map though, sometimes you have to go to the middle for good cover.Downing ufos is what counts, as well as doing landed ufo missions. The base screen has info on that base, and if you don't hover over a region you can see total income / upkeep / projected change. That's it I think.dyzzy fucked around with this message at 01:29 on Jul 3, 2014Jul 3, 2014 01:25.Mukip Jan 27, 2011Is this game very slow and laggy for everybody else? I pre-ordered this years ago, back when they were trying to have it released before the XCOM Remake, but having played that I feel spoiled by the X-COM UI and controller support. Having to manage TUs and fuss about with how many extra grenades each snowflake soldier can have just seems like a big step backwards. I spent 10-15 minutes crawling across the map in my first mission before I found any aliens.

My impression so far is that I should probably reinstall XCOM.Jul 3, 2014 08:31.Major Isoor Mar 23, 2011. Not laggy for me at all. What are your PC specs? In other news, one of my majors who had been involved in the war from the start; Czechoslovakian superstar Emil Kucera (it's late Feb 1980 and he's got 25 kills so far - tying for second) was shot point-blank in the back of the head by a teleporting Wraith (after being full-health that is), was left dying on the floor for at least 15 turns, somehow survived and was promoted to Commander. He's now in charge of my Hainan/Hong Kong base, putting all the no-kills rookies to shame with his kill count and obviously-superior vitality. You better believe I'm saving him for the final mission!Jul 3, 2014 08:40.Mukip Jan 27, 2011Actually, It's mainly the alien turns that are slow, and the game seems to freeze for several seconds when my own turn comes around.Jul 3, 2014 08:46.MrBims Sep 25, 2007I get the freeze too, on an AMD 8-core.

After the hidden movement window goes down, there is about five seconds where aliens in LOS are invisible, TUs aren't refreshed yet and I can't control anything.Mukip I highly recommend checking out the Long War mod for XCOM, I'm normally a pretty big purist to the UFO Defense formula but much prefer Long War over Xenonauts.MrBims fucked around with this message at 08:55 on Jul 3, 2014Jul 3, 2014 08:53.cock hero flux Apr 17, 2011. Goddamn, this game just keeps beating me down. I'm getting further every time, but eventually I just can't keep up and things start falling apart. And it's almost always due to bloody Androns.I don't think I've won a single Andron Terror Mission yet.

Those big guns with their explosive insta-kills.How the hell am I supposed to cope with that stuff? It takes so many plasma bullets to knock them down, and there are often 2 to 3 at once. Am I missing some super-effective anti-andron strategy here?Maybe I'll just adopt a strategy of 'All Rookies, All Rockets' next time I get a terror mission and we'll see how that goes.Whenever I see Androns it's time to roll out the Tank and shell as much of the map as possible.Jul 3, 2014 10:24.Demiurge4 Aug 10, 2011I've been doing reasonably well just spacing my upgrades and expansions out a little. I made sure to get a Foxtrot up asap even though it's not really needed in the first month but it'll save you factory time later.

In month 2 I built my new base and sent a foxtrot there and bought two condors. Two condors and a foxtrot WILL gently caress up most UFO's, even those with escorts.

When I unlocked Corsairs I made it my first priority to have one in each of my 3 bases, these are expensive to build but a foxtrot and corsair can easily take down the lander UFO's with T2 explosives.I agree though that the Androns are hard as gently caress, I lost my entire team trying to halfass my first lander and well I think I'm starting over and being a little more careful. I've been swimming in cash so I think I'll make an effort to build more workshops in my home base and space the labs out to other bases.Jul 3, 2014 10:53.GlyphGryph Jun 23, 2013Strategy 'Fight Robots With Robots' seems to be working well. Like if you're over desert terrain it's a desert ground tile drifting by underneath, or urban or farm or whatever. With like a cloud layer at a slightly different speed. It'd probably be a lot of work for something so minor, but I'm not really keen on the radar look. Plus, then you'd easily be able to see what sort of terrain your guys would be fighting on!Jul 3, 2014 23:50.Space Hamlet Aug 24, 2009.

₤₤LOADSA MONAY₤₤Use the C4 on UFO external and internal doors to open them permanently. This is a lot safer than walking up to the door to open it as well, especially on a boat like the Scout where the door is inset.

It can also be used to make holes in dividing walls on the map such as the concrete pens in farm terrain. The most TU efficient way to use it is to set the timer and then drop it on the ground where you want it, since it takes a large% of your total TU to throw.Once upon a time I had a soldier with active C4 in one hand and a shield in the other panic and run, dropping his shield and keeping the explosive. Esposito.C4 doesn't destroy UFO hulls or internal walls but there's a mod for that.Jul 4, 2014 10:12.The Lone Badger Sep 24, 2007Instead of C4, try using a tank gun. Two shots per turn and long rangedJul 4, 2014 11:25.Demiurge4 Aug 10, 2011Where do I get leaders? I stormed an alien base full of the sectoid lookalikes but all it had were officers. I got my first officer in the first month and now I'm in the next year and my objective is still 'capture enemy leader'.Also I think the game doesn't telegraph how important the base upgrade tech is because it's a 50% boost to lab and workshop efficiency and it has some hilarious dialogue showing just how crazily trans humanist the scientist guy is.Jul 4, 2014 12:36.Ultramega Jul 9, 2004I'm loving this game so far.

Back when Firaxcom was slated for release I bought old XCOM to try it out and was amazed by how deep a 16-bit game from 1994 could be.I just got about 3 months into vet. Difficulty and had to restart after loving up a terror mission in australia and losing my A-Team and a huge chunk of funding from the soviet union because of letting a few bombers destroy oil rigs while my fighters were out of commission. God I love this game. Also it's really hilarious watching UFOs land, then deciding to deploy my dropship only to have it pop up and wreck my dropship and kill my best troops. 10/10, would invade again.Jul 4, 2014 13:47.hambeet Sep 13, 2002Please bitches. This seems to be a common problem with any x-com-likes; the whole reverse difficulty curve and weird end-game balance.I remember at one point during UFO:ET, I actually managed to get a tier ahead of the aliens in terms of weaponry. I've never played an XClone where I've not been playing catchup the whole game and it was the weirdest feeling, effortlessly gunning down superior foes with super-awesome plasma warp storm guns. It rectified itself about five or six missions later, but it still stands out in my mind.Jul 5, 2014 16:56.Kaal May 22, 2002JEREMY CORBYN BULLIED MY NAZI GRANDPA IN PRIMARY SCHOOL. In XCOM, virtually all of the difficulty is to be found in the first two months, where it's easy to see a squad wipe or to get hosed by the geoscape dice. If you make it through that initial period unscathed, it's smooth sailing to the end of the game. If not, then most people just scrap the run and try again. It's not a smart way of doing it, since it just means that people end up repeating the beginning of the game a bunch.Jul 5, 2014 17:08.AdbotADBOT LOVES YOU.
